Has anyone wondered why peanut er & now dogfood are hurting our loved ones?

My mom just called and informed me of the tainted dog food. She reminded me of the tainted peanut er incident recently. Can anyone speculate, has this only been prominent here in the states? It leaves the mind to wander.
